Unwinding After a Trash Day

Some days are just heavy! That report was due and you almost did not make the deadline but you did. The day might have started off crappy because you were late so your whole day got thrown off. Customer after customer made you question if this job is worth it. The cheeky comments from that one co-worker made you doubled your fist but in an instant you realised that they aren’t worth it. Guess what my friend, the work day is over…traffic to get home was 2 hrs long but you’re home. Your safe haven is there…but…something just feels off. The exhaustion of the battles fought today absolutely drained you. What do you do? Yes, I know your feet hurt and you might even be too tired to cook dinner but lets do something to unwind and reshuffle everything that disturbed your equilibrium today.

Here are some self-care ideas to try after having a trash day:

  1. A special shower/ bath – what can be so special about bathing?

Run that warm shower (or cold if you’re that kind of person)

Light a scented candle

Get your favourite body scrub

Apply a face-mask

Turn on your favourite music playlist

Some people have a full on concert in their shower, some might pray and reach out to their supreme being during that time and some might just be present and listen to the sound of the water hitting their body – do what works for you

Wash that day away, enjoy the different aroma, forget about all your troubles, projects, deadlines and just be present. If you did not get any time away from people for the entire day, here is your chance to just re-charge- enjoy it.

When you’re finished, ensure to moisturise with your favourite body oil/gel. Some may even use a nice perfume. The idea is that you are going to give your body the attention it needs- rub every inch of your skin that you’re able to and release the tension as you go along.

Pick out that one of those cute and comfy sleepwear that you bought off Shein because that’s the fit for the night.

2. Watch a comedy

Put on something that will make you laugh and release those endorphins. This might be the first time for that day that you’ll have a real laugh – you deserve it.

Even if you are into Drama/ Action/ Thrillers – try something more light-hearted after a heavy day…trust me, just try it. You will feel lighter.

3. Make some tea

TEA?! Yes, tea. Some herbs actually have benefit in restoring balance – camomile, lavender, green tea, rosemary, mint – get your favourite teabag and sip on it as you watch that comedy.

4. Do some colouring

–looks arounds— Did I really just suggested colouring? Absolutely! There are adult colouring books that you can buy online and even in your local bookshops. Dust off your old box of Crayola coloured pencils and delve into some art.

5. Journal

If you are anything like me, you have a million journals. Yes, I actually use them. Write whatever comes to mind, use all the expletives you wanted to shout at that co-worker or customer but did’nt (thankfully), write a prayer, write a letter to someone you miss. If you don’t know where to start, there are alot of journal prompts online but my favourite place for prompts is Pinterest.

6. Meditate

Whatever this means to you- do it. If you have no clue how to – Youtube is your friend- they have guided meditations for what you want to achieve.

Release all the negative energy and feel refreshed again.

7. Listen to your favourite podcast / music playlist

When I say I love music, I love music! I can find a song for any and everything – whatever mood you are in, whether you want to embrace it or shed it, there is a set of songs waiting to help you – tested and proven.

If you’re more of a podcast person, put on your favourite one but ensure is a light one – you aren’t doing yourself any good by listening to heavy topics at the end of a stressful day; remember this is your time to unwind and relax.
